By Sue Lee
Hi, I’m Sue Lee, and during the COVID lockdowns, I discovered a passion for painting that has since become an integral part of my life. I am captivated by the interplay of vibrant colors and enjoy experimenting with bold, expressive techniques. My artistic focus often revolves around flowers, particularly poppies, sunflowers, and daisies, each interpreted through my unique artistic lens.
Working primarily with acrylics, I am constantly exploring ways to enhance my paintings with depth and texture. In addition to traditional paint, I incorporate various papers into my work, ranging from specialty papers to unconventional materials like wallpaper and tissue paper. These additions not only add visual interest but also invite tactile exploration, enriching the viewer's experience of my art.
Growing up on a self-sustaining farm instilled in me a spirit of curiosity and innovation. I was taught to approach challenges with a mindset of "what if, what else, and why not?" This ethos deeply influences my creative process, encouraging me to push boundaries and explore unconventional ideas. For instance, when I envisioned a dragonfly embellishing one of my pieces, I embarked on a quest across various locales to source beads and lace, painstakingly crafting the intricate insect to perfection. Similarly, my desire for a three-dimensional bumblebee led me to experiment with beadwork, resulting in a charming, lifelike addition to one of my floral compositions.
I am honored to be a part of ARTWORKS@STREETS OF SOUTHGLENN, a local cooperative gallery nestled in the heart of Denver Metro's artistic community. Collaborating with fellow artists across diverse mediums allows us to inspire and challenge one another, fostering an environment where creativity flourishes.
Recently, I embarked on a new artistic journey by incorporating tissue paper into my paintings. In my latest piece, I meticulously applied Mod Podge to the canvas, petal by petal, before delicately scrunching tissue paper onto these areas. The tissue paper, sealed with additional layers of Mod Podge, created a textured backdrop that enhanced the vibrancy of the painted flowers. To further accentuate the organic elements of the composition, I meticulously painted wooden circles and pieces, adding a tactile dimension to the seed pods of the poppies. The result is Bold Blossoms, a vivid, dynamic portrayal of three poppies in full bloom, celebrating nature's beauty with a fresh, contemporary twist.
Through my art, I strive to evoke joy and curiosity, inviting viewers to appreciate the world around them through a new lens. Each piece I create is a testament to my journey as an artist, reflecting my passion for experimentation and my reverence for nature's intricate beauty.
In conclusion, my artistic exploration at ARTWORKS reflects a commitment to innovation and a celebration of nature's beauty. I look forward to continuing to push artistic boundaries and sharing my creative journey with the vibrant community here in Denver Metro and beyond.
